No Driver, sorry didn't quite hear that, come again??

Published: Sunday, February 05, 2012

In ten years time, the German brand BMW believe a self driving car could become a reality.

The video hereunder shows the prototype BMW which looks like a conventional BMW 5 Series which is being tested on Germany’s No speed-limit autobahn, controlled by a complex range of sensor systems, including radars, cameras, laser scanners and ultrasonics.
Real time GPS data, assists the test vehicle to be able to manoeuvre around any area mapped by the car’s manufacturer, even changing lanes when required.

The car still requires a ‘driver’, but the ambition is for him to not have to interfere with the vehicle’s movements at all.

"Our main challenge was to develop algorithms that can handle entirely new situations said Nico Kaempchen, project manager of Highly Automated Driving at BMW Group Research and Technology, "In principle, the system works on all freeways that we have mapped out beforehand within a centimetre accuracy."

BMW first announced plans to invent a self-driving car last August. The company believe that the car, which has already embarked on several hundred miles of research driving, may be only 10-15 years away from being ready for market.
